Preparing Your Backyard for Pool Season: Tips for a Smooth Opening

The sun’s out, temps are rising, and that backyard pool is practically calling your name. Pool season is coming and we are here to help you dive in! At Poolside of the Carolinas, we know how exciting it is to take that first splash, but a smooth pool opening starts long before your feet hit the water.

Under NEW OWNERSHIP and backed by decades of experience in seasonal pool openings, our team is here to help make your backyard the ultimate warm-weather retreat. Whether you’re a long-time pool owner or opening your backyard oasis for the first time, here are our expert tips to get your pool (and outdoor space) prepped and ready.

Step 1: Clear the Deck

Start by removing any debris, furniture covers, or clutter that’s gathered over the winter months. Give your patio or pool deck a good sweep and hose-down to clear away pollen, leaves, and dirt. This is also a great time to inspect your outdoor furniture and grill setup as you’ll want everything fresh and functional for those first backyard BBQs!

Step 2: Remove the Pool Cover

Gently remove your pool cover and lay it out flat to dry. Once it’s clean and dry, store it away properly to avoid mildew and damage. Pro tip: If your cover has standing water, use a cover pump first to avoid dumping murky water into your freshly treated pool.

Step 3: Reconnect and Inspect Equipment

It’s time to wake your pool system from hibernation! Reconnect your pump, filter, heater, and any other equipment that was winterized. Inspect all parts for cracks, leaks, or wear, and don’t forget to check your O-rings and gaskets. If anything looks questionable, we’ve got replacements and expert repair services ready to go!

Step 4: Clean and Balance the Water

Once the circulation system is running, test your water's chemical balance. This includes pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and sanitizer levels. Shock the pool if needed and start adding chemicals slowly. Not sure where to begin? Stop by our store for water testing and professional-grade chemicals from brands you trust.

Step 5: Consider an Upgrade—Hot Tub or Sauna, Anyone?

Why limit your backyard enjoyment to just the summer months? Adding a hot tub or sauna can transform your outdoor space into a year-round relaxation zone. Imagine cozying up in bubbling water under the stars on a crisp fall evening, or unwinding in a steamy sauna after a chilly day. We carry an exciting range of options to fit any space and lifestyle, and our experts can help with selection and installation.
