How to Close Your Pool Like a Pro: Smooth Transitions to Fall

Fall is creeping in and that means it's time to start thinking about closing down your pool for the season. It's not the most glamorous part of pool ownership, but doing it right can save you time, money and major headaches when it's time to open back up next spring.

Whether you're a first timer or a seasoned pool owner, here's your straightforward, step-by-step guide to closing your pool the smart way, plus a little inspiration for what comes next (hint: cozy hot tub nights).

Step 1: Clean It Up

Before you even think about covering your pool, give it a good thorough cleaning.

  • Skim the surface to remove leaves and debris

  • Vacuum the bottom

  • Brush the walls and tile

  • Empty and clean your skimmer and pump baskets

Why it matters: Anything left in your pool over winter can stain, clog or cause damage

Step 2: Balance the Water Chemistry

Get your pool water balanced about a week before closing. Here's what to aim for:

  • pH: 7.2-7.6

  • Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm

  • Calcium Hardness: 180-220 ppm

  • Chlorine: 1-3 ppm

You can also add a winterizing chemical kit to help prevent algae and bacteria growth during the off season.

Step 3: Lower the Water Level

Lower the water to just below the skimmer level if you're using a mesh cover. If you're using a solid cover, you might want to go a few inches lower to prevent freezing and expansion damage.

Step 4: Blow Out and Plug the Lines

If you live in a area where temps can dip below freezing (yes, even parts of North Carolina!), you'll want to blow out your plumbing lines and plug the returns.

  • Use a shop vac or air compressor to blow out the lines

  • Plug return lines with winterizing plugs

  • Add pool antifreeze if necessary

Not comfortable doing this yourself or don't have the time? Call in a pro....it's worth it!

Step 5: Cover it Right

Invest in a solid, high-quality pool cove to protect your pool from debris and UV damage. Make sure it's tight-fitting and securely fastened.

Tip: Don't forget to add a cover pump or siphon if you're using a solid cover. You don't want rainwater polling on top.
